The Letter

Young private James Davis sat writing his love
The air all around carried the odors of war
Its over he tells her it’s the end of my tour
As I write this letter I’ve just three days more
In an ambush evening fighting for his life
Jimmy jumped up and charged on alone
His body was riddle but his squad move on
In his pocket the letter he’d never sent home
The letter said I sure miss your smile
I’ll be there with you in just a short while
I can’t wait to take you in my arms again
When I make it home all this waiting will end
Young Jenny Ann Davis sat home all alone
When the uniformed soldiers knocked at her door
Her Jimmy had died a hero they say
But for Jenny her Jimmy was a casualty of war
In solitude and silence she knelt down to pray
Asking for the strength to go on alone
Her faith told her Jimmy’s waiting on the other side
So she sat down to write him a letter of her own
The letter said I sure miss your smile
Soon I’ll be with you it’s been a long while
I can’t wait to hold you in my arms once again
When I pass through that door this waiting will end
