Story behind the song
I attended a dinner at a friends house where the subject turned to race. After some while I challenged his families and friends believes and suddenly I was the odd-man out. But I wasn't going to let their ignorance go unchallenged and I ended up losing a friend over the ordeal. Needless to say I haven't been invited back to dinner since.
Lyrics
It Matters ____________________ The grass is green and the windows sparkle the nanny smiles and the gardeners humble they know their place 'cause your not so subtle ...well they need their job 'cause they've hungry kids ...and their clothes are faded and tattered ...so they put up with the indignities ...but to them don't you think that it matters...(it matters)... You say you never mean no harm it's just 'some of 'em go too far' besides you've got other friends who're 'dark' ..."so what you tryin' to put me down for ...to me it isn't a matter ...if you wanna love every gawdamn one, go ahead...I don't care" ...It matters,...it matters... Church is part of the football Sunday so we go and forget all the things that we say and Jesus loves all the children anyway ...but the children see what is going on ...and the way that you talk about others ...it's they who carry the torch that we burn ...and use it in everyday matters ...from the boy who's bloodied by playground antics ...to the man on the street who is battered ...when the phone call comes and it's your child's turn ...maybe then...maybe then it'll matter...*
