The bassist (me) was heavily influenced by '60s soul music at the time. Having successfully talked the other Lime Giants into covering Rufus Thomas's "Do the Push and Pull," on which Pat Bills played the horn parts on the drums and which was among the band's most popular live numbers, I tried to write a Stax-Volt homage. Mark Deming wrote a lion's share of the lyrics. I was flattered that the band elected to make "Learn When You Burn" the kickoff track on the cassette, "At Home With the Lime Giants." Mark Nowlin: I love the little goat-like warble Mark "Cyrus" Deming uses to deliver the word, "reap."
