The Lime Giants were asked by Jamie DePolo to write a song to accompany a recruitment video for the Michigan State University Department of Agriculture (I believe). Chris and Mark Deming set about it right away, and this is what they came up with. The official version, the one that ended up on the recruitment video, has a slightly amended lyric. Jamie wasn't sure the line, "I'm so sick of starting over, here I go again" was optimistic enough for the intended purpose of the song. For the cassette "At Home With the Lime Giants," the lads decided to stick with the original, less hopeful lyric, which is what you hear here. (Note the indebtedness of the bass line to Camper Van Beethoven's "Take the Skinheads Bowling," a college radio hit at the time.) Mark Nowlin: Nobody knows this, but this is my favorite Lime Giants song. I used to play this as a solo on acoustic guitar at an open mic night in Cincinnati when I was in grad school in the late '90s. And I still pronounce the word "DIE-rection" as a tribute to the genius of this song.
