A nostalgic look back at baseball and how appreciation for the sport has evoled today.
My brother Steve and I were sitting in my house one night reminissing about when we were kids.( Steve was still recovering from having a kidney removed as a result of kidney cancer) We loved baseball and so I wrote the song from that conversation.
WHEN IT WAS A GAME
(C)2001 Jim Lane & Steve Lane
Ev'ry summer mornin' we'd ride our bikes out to the field
One by one our friends would come,it still seems so real
We played the game for hours or 'til we knocked the cover off the ball
Up until September, that's what I recall
I tried to pitch like Koufax,Robbie thought he was Babe Ruth
He could hit some long ones, wasn't that far from the truth
And when Steve stold a base,he'd say "Maury Wills is my name"
I can still remember, when it was a game
CHORUS
When it was a game,we didn't make a million bucks
We all played the game for fun,we were baseball nuts
Tryin' to catch a fly-ball,like old Will Mays
I can still remember, when it was a game
My friends have all grown up now,we watch the games on TV
Some complain it's not the same with free agency
But,when a batter hits the ball and you know he's got the range
I can still remember, when it was a game
REPEAT CHORUS
BRIDGE
Well,I know that things are diff'rent, don't know when they changed
But,I can still remember, when it was a game
REPEAT CHORUS
TAG
Tryin' to catch a fly-ball,like old Willy Mays
I can still remember, when it was a game
