I live just outside of Nashville and write country, country/rock, and novelty songs. Thanks for listening.
Story behind the song
Written with my brother, Bill, in 1978 in Glendale, Arizona, while we were having a few. Recorded in 1981 by the Red Eye Country Band from Deming, New Mexico, for the annual Deming Duck Races.
Lyrics
I went outside this morning to look for my pet duck
He was crawlin' 'cross the centerline, been hit by a semi truck
I threw him o'er my shoulder and carried him inside
He smoked his final cigarette, lay back, quacked and died
(Chorus):
He don't quack no more, just lies there on the floor
With his little webbed feet pointing at the sky
He was my closest friend, but he'll never quack again
'Cause now he's on that duckpond in the sky
I remember how he used to drink when he was alive
For every shot of Jack I had, that dang, drunk, duck drank five
Today he had too many and tried to cross the street
Now the only soul he has left is on the bottoms of his feet
(Repeat Chorus)
(Bridge):
So if you have a drinkin' duck you want to keep around
Keep your eyes upon him when he starts to pour it down
(Repeat Chorus)
