Story behind the song
Recorded by Will Shade and the Memphis Jug Band May, 1930. Ita€™s thought that the song is mis-titled a€œAunt Caroline Dyer Bluesa€ because of the Mississippi propensity to add an a€œra€ sound at the end of words. Further confounding the record is Will Shadea€™s confusing Dyea€™s home of Newport, Arkansas, with Newport News, Virginia, the subject of his 1927 song a€œNewport News Bluesa€ which provides the song structure for Aunt Caroline. In the song, the term a€œsona€ refers to Shade himself who, raised by his grandmother, Annie Brimmer, was known as Son Brimmer, the title of his first record a€œSon Brimmera€™s Blues.a€
