Jazz vocalist Harvey Thompson had been approached by the Consul General of the Thai Consulate of Osaka, Japan to sing a song about Thailand. After reviewing a number of tunes, he decided that none of them fit his vocal style, so he asked me to write one, both music and lyrics. He also requested that saxophonist Paul Fleisher be given a solo in the tune. Thailand is known as The Land of Smiles.
If all I could do was smile,
Would there be a place for me,
A place that's not so far away,
Where everyone is free
To smile as they please,
A wonderful place to be?
Thailand
If all I could do was smile,
This is where I'd like to be,
Where I could stand on clean, white sand
Before an Asian sea,
Or amidst fields of green,
Or in rain forests pristine.
Thailand.
From the bustle of the city
To the mountains and the sea,
We'll share a soft adventure.
Come and smile with me.
If all I could do was smile,
Would there be a place for me,
A place that's not so far away,
Where everyone is free
To smile as they please,
A wonderful place to be?
The land of smiles...
Thailand.
