Story behind the song
Just our yearly camp out with family at Merritt Reservoir south of Valentine Nebraska. One of my favorite camping and fishing spots. Was fishing in the early hours of the morning for Walleye and caught a small perch - hooked to the gills - I called Charley (the Merritt Seagul) and invited him for dinner. Charley came in less than a minute, fought 2 other gulls - grabed the perch and brought it to shore in front of me - about 50 feet away and it ate the perch in 15 minutes - take one bite and look up... Grandma Lois and Grandpa Darrel (Bower) always called Charley for dinner while fishing in Merritt... This song is for them and those that have departed and miss very much! They are like spirits above the water - in my memories and this song!
