Story behind the song
The centerpiece of the Superstone LP, The Ballad was once titled "What Could Have Been" but was the only slower song performed in the early days of After Alms, so it was often referred to as "the ballad." It's also the only live recording on the LP. Mike Powell, a friend and longtime collaborator with Derrick, wrote the lyrics to a girl that he had hoped (at the time) would be "The One."
