Story behind the song
Mark wrote the core of the song while waiting at Derrick's house one afternoon. The first inklings of the words came at the same time. The line "Goodbye blue skies" was a tribute to Mark's Pink Floyd influence, although the song itself couldn't be more different. When Derrick returned from his errand, the song was finished collaboratively. The lyrics came from a "story" of poetic prose that Mark had previously written about a personal experience, and they were revised to fit into the song's arrangement. The title was also changed from the working title which appears in the first line of the second verse (Shadows and Uncertainty).
Lyrics
Damaged goods is all we ever are From the womb to the grave our demons call to us And steal our youth To save ourselves we cling to pride And delude ourselves with these webs of lies And call them truth While you seek confirmation Alone in the night I'm sleeping in my bed Goodbye, blue skies Wea€™ll fall but wea€™ll rise from these ashes and dust Good night, sleep tight Wea€™ll never end up hopeless if you believe in us In the shadows and uncertainty We deceive ourselves with our own make-believes To what avail And maybe we can fool ourselves But to the rest of world we are as glass To see right through And while the constellations Scatter and shine Ia€™m sleeping in your bed Goodbye, blue skies Wea€™ll fall but wea€™ll rise from these ashes and dust Good night, sleep tight Wea€™ll never end up hopeless if you believe in us Good night, tonight, to rise Rise, rise And when you feel that you cana€™t Carry it all Wea€™ll leave these secrets unkept And ride off into the sunset
