A song about the unattainable woman. While it's all my own work, on play-back I can hear touches of Dave Crosby and Gillian Welch (not bad company to be in, mind you!).
The song is a kind of portmanteau of various experiences of falling for someone who was already involved with someone else. The theme was partly suggested by the film "Brief Encounter" and the play "Cyrano de Bergerac".
In a different world
In a different time
Maybe I once was yours
And you were mine
But long before we met
I say this with regret
We boarded trains that went
Down different lines
To a different world
To a different world
And a different time
A little tenderness
A little time
Might heal your wounds, baby,
As they’ll heal mine
Someone to turn to when
The night descends
And your resistance ends
And leaves you crying
For a different world
For a different world
And a different time
And I know there's no tomorrow
For neither you nor I are free
Chains of love and obligation
Tie us to our destiny
But in a different world
And a different time
You were once mine
But long before we met
I say this with regret
We boarded trains that went
Down different lines
To a different world
To a different world
And a different time
