Story behind the song
So the other day I was watching TV and on came a movie from 1991 called "The Commitments". Never saw or heard of it before. The plot in a nutshell is: 'The travails of Jimmy Rabbitte to form the "World's Hardest Working Band," The Commitments, and bring soul music to the people of Dublin, Ireland.' A really good movie with even better music, like Try a Little Tenderness, Midnight Hour, and Mustang Sally. I got such a kick out of the movie and music that I thought I'd try my hand at getting that same energy in a new song. Started writing and remembered the old mantra, "write what you know". While it didn't come out as "son of Mustang Sally", I was pretty happy with the sound of "Back in Astoria". So I did a YouTube video
Lyrics
Back in Astoria, at the 46th street park, We learned all about drinking and love, and Did them both in my car. A Pontiac Tempest, red with pinstripes on the side. And a four speed on the floor. It was sweet, I ain't lying. We'd race the connecting highway. Quarter mile bridge to bridge. There were vets and goats and 442's. Even saw a rail do the trip, and the Cops would break us up, and then we'd go back to the Park. I'd play my guitar, backing up the Chants singing in the dark. We snuck in the park it was very dark. And pushed a car in the pool, thought it was so cool. The boys bathroom made the songs sound sweet, It was the place everyone would meet, Back in Astoria, at the 46th street park. We never broke the law too much. But don't you know, don't you know, we did, we did have fun.
