Story behind the song
I think it's amazing that diamonds, perhaps the most beautiful substance in the world, are created from something as plain and simple as lumps of coal. Aren't people the same way? We have the potential within us all along, and we simply have to let God release it! I hope that this song also reminds us not to be judgemental of others, because we are all diamonds underneath -- God is able, hallelujah!
Lyrics
You're standing on the outside looking in; A dirty lump of coal is all you see. You start to walk away, but won't you pause To think for just a moment -- Think about the possibilities CHORUS If you peel away the mask You'll only find another But, one by one, they'll crumble like dry leaves, And when the last defense has fallen, You'll find that, hidden secretly, There was a diamond underneath You're looking at the woman in the glass An infinite mistake is all you see But if you'll only take the time to learn The moral for this story Maybe you'll find the good that's buried underneath CHORUS Bridge: Can you imagine the streets of gold With diamonds walking down 'em 'Cause someday soon, that's how it's gonna be And if it takes us all a lifetime, Someday I know we're gonna see We're all diamonds underneath CHORUS You are a diamond Look at you shining We're all diamonds underneath
