Story behind the song
As I’m sure you all know, this is the song that ended up being the “hit single,” debuting on the charts at number six which is fairly remarkable for an independent act. Even more remarkable when you take in to account that we didn’t even have an official album released. A whole new audience began attending our concerts, not really familiar with our history or what we were about. They just wanted to hear that funny song about the time machine. Most bands would hold it over the audience’s head and wait until their encore to play it. Bands with more “punk rock” ethics might simply refuse to play the song at all, citing the purity and conviction to their D.I.Y. roots and independence from the mainstream. Some bands might even play their hit single early on in their set to weed out the bandwagon fans from the die hard ones, expecting half of the crowd to leave after they play it. This is why the Satanic Puppeteer Orchestra always has and always will stand out from the crowd. Once on our last tour we decided to oblige the audience by playing it as our very first song. To keep the energy building after it ended, SPO-20 started it up again immediately. By the end of the night, we’d played “I Stole Your Daddy’s Time Machine” close to twenty times and drove everyone out of the building.
