Elizabeth Is Learning
Elizabeth washes up on an empty beach
Waves on black sand, world out of reach
Elizabeth wrings the water out of her shirt
Gathers up driftwood but can’t make it burn
Elizabeth is learning to live on her own
Elizabeth is learning to live
Night falls on the water. She stands on the stones
Stranded undiscovered, weary to the bone
Bright eyes like a beacon piercing the night
So much horizon but no ship in sight
Elizabeth is learning to live on her own
Elizabeth is learning to live
You can’t trust the weather
You can’t trust the ship
You can’t trust the captain’s hand
Once you’ve seen it slip
There’s a refuge in uncharted water
But it ain’t no place to stay
Everyday the seagulls fly
But they never fly away
Elizabeth is learning to live on her own
Elizabeth is learning to swim
