Story behind the song
Brandon Teena (born Teena Renae Brandon December 12, 1972 - December 31, 1993 in Lincoln, Nebraska) was a trans man who was raped and murdered. Teena was born biologically female but lived as male, making him a trans man; his later life and death were the subject of the Academy Award-winning 1999 film Boys Don't Cry, which was based on the documentary film The Brandon Teena Story.
Lyrics
Freedom (Brandon Teena version) Vs1: Teena Brandon was boy in the body of a girl. His parents raised him as a her. He didn?t fit into that world. He knew there had to be an answer he knew there had to be a plan..and in the middle of the madness..he realized he was a man. Chorus: and his soul was crying for FREEDOM. Rock with me baby! Vs2: So Teena Brandon moved away and Brandon Teena took his place. He made friends who did not know his past-all his troubles fell away. He felt alive for the first time. A pretty woman fell for him, and he thought he finally had the chance to live his life in Freedom. Chorus: and his soul was crying for FREEDOM. Rock with me baby! Vs3: I remember Brandon Teena when I go to bed at night cause he chose the path of FREEDOM and they took away his life. Diversity is the key to unlock your mind. Take a look inside that darkened room and leave the fear outside. Chorus: our souls are crying for FREEDOM. Rock with me baby!
