Songs have been written about every conceivable person, place or thing in which the songwriter has passion or love for. From the beginning of time, people have penned songs about the person they love... or hope to love. Patriotic songs about one's country, city or region are a part of every culture. Songs about one's car, favorite food or other material objects are commonplace on radio's airwaves. Television is filled with jingles by manufacturers trying to get us to embrace their product with intimacy. Songs have even been written by cowboys about the horse they love. But, the most intimate songs ever penned are those by people who have a relationship with the God who made us. They just can't hold it in and they want the world to know what God has done for them!
Though we might later suppress the urge, we are all born with the innate desire to sing songs about our Creator. The Bible informs us that even in heaven... the very throne room of God, songs by angelic hosts are sung non-stop about the magnificence of God. Their voices fill heaven's air with thunderous magnitude proclaiming the majesty of the Lord for all to hear! At the Savior's earthly birth multitudes of the heavenly hosts filled the sky and sang praise regarding God's glory and goodness. His very being motivates all who are affectionate towards Him to open our mouth and sing!
Likewise, when penning the lyrics to "The Last Millennium", I couldn't hold back from proclaiming the intimate way God has intervened within my own life. He has touched me at such a personal level of the heart, mind and soul that my songs have been a natural way of expressing gratitude and thanks to Him. The Alpha and Omega Suite contains many songs expressing God's glory but none any more personal and dear than the Last Millennium. This is a song which goes beyond the revelation of the Bible and the way God has interacted with others throughout time. This is where God personally speaks, verifies and validates that all contained within skripture is indeed true and pertinent for me... just like it has been for so many before me.
As a song expressing Christ's glory throughout the church age, the Last Millennium naturally expresses intimacy between Him and His bride. So, when I write about what Christ has done for me, I'm also conveying the same feelings which are known by all who have been touched by the Savior and His love, care and affection. Any love song to the Savior is by nature a testimony to His love, not exactly the love emanating from the singer/songwriter. We love Him because He first loved us. Our love is based on gratitude, His love is based on who He is and the action which flows from Him.
The central focus of the song's chorus is the love of the heart. This love changes and evolves as each chorus is sung. It contains the personal love to Christ from the singer. It also contains the universal love of the church for our Savior. And ultimately it sings of the majestic love which the Savior has given to us and our world throughout the millennia.
How can we give enough thanks and praise to the One who loves us so much that He provided the means for a relationship to happen where one could not be.
(Chorus Intro)
Christ touched my heart in the last millennium. Not long ago.
I gave my heart in the last millennium. So long ago.
(Verse 1)
Oh, it seems like just a dream.
When I was not clean. But now You have redeemed.
I was my own but now I am Yours.
Doing what lasts and endures.
Temptations do come but You already made me secure.
(Chorus 1)
You gave of your heart throughout the millenniums. For all to know.
You gave me a new start in the last millennium. Not long ago.
(Verse 2)
It's been many long years since You walked right here.
But we were so blind. Couldn't see what was clear.
You entered our world as part of our race.
Came to a specific time and place.
You suffered and did die as You showed us Your saving grace.
(Chorus 2)
Your Word did not depart in the last millennium. But it did grow.
You live in our hearts throughout the millenniums. And it does show.
(Verse 3)
There's so many idle folks who don't want to be used.
You can take Your pick. There are thousands to choose.
You pulled me out to help and to get your work done.
Until you once again do come.
Many have never heard. The job has just started. And it's only just begun.
(Chorus)
Christ touched my heart in the last millennium. Not long ago.
I gave my heart in the last millennium. So long ago.
You gave of your heart throughout the millenniums. For all to know.
You gave me a new start in the last millennium. Not long ago.
Your Word did not depart in the last millennium. But it did grow.
You live in our hearts throughout the millenniums. And it does show.
