Story behind the song
We have a great spiritual advantage compared to those who lived prior to Christ's first coming. While many once lived under the restraints of God's law (or ignored His law), we live under God's gracious mercy as bestowed at the cross. The world's pre-crucifixion population were not even able to look forward with a clear vision to understand what God had planned. Now, we're able to easily look back to the cross and see how it's affected us in a multitude of positive ways. We might not be able to comprehend all of God's ways, but His provision for redemption is universally understandable to all who trust and believe in His word. The good news of the gospel could not have been guessed before it happened. Even the angels couldn't foresee what would take place in God's plan of redemption, though they knew He had something in store for mankind. But at precisely the correct time, God provided the 'sacrificial lamb' of His beloved Son and the bonds which enslaved mankind were removed, shattered and freedom could be known to all who reached out for it with acceptance of the Messiah! Even the specific day of the week which the victorious resurrection occurred had special significance. Though He had set aside the last day of the week to be the day of rest known as the Sabbath, God would instead use a day of work to be His majestic resurrection day. He appropriately picked the first day of the week, known for newness, freshness and the beginning of new life. The events which transpired on that Sunday altered the universe for ever more. The elusive door to heaven was now open! When God set into motion the creation process at the beginning of (understandable) time, the first step He took was to give light to the world. Since God Himself is light, this illumination given to the physical universe could only come from Him, otherwise everything would have remained lifeless, unseeable and unknowable. But He took what was dark and barren and gave light and abundance to everything enveloped within that darkness! This all took place on what the Bible refers to as 'day one', or what we call Sunday. Millenniums later, on a hill outside of Jerusalem, after God's Son had been crucified without mercy, He once again demonstrated His life-giving power. God rolled the stone away which sealed the tomb where Christ' body had been lain. The grave, though dark and restrictive, was unable to keep God's light and life from reaching His beloved Son. The sinless Christ had achieved victory over all things in which men and women were in bondage to... and His resurrection and ascension attested to His triumph! Ever since, all who trust and put their hope in the victorious Christ also share in His life. We no longer have the fear of death or defeat dangled before us. Just as He rose and went to be with His Father, we too are able to shed death's shackles and be where our Savior lives. He waits for us with arms of mercy outstretched. And the day of Christ's resurrection has been blessed and special to those who live by His name. It is a day adopted by many of His followers as the day when they congregate, fellowship and unite in the worship of the Lamb! The triumph of His cross is remembered and adored on every Sunday which has spanned the last two millenniums. Christ owns that day... Sunday is truly His alone!
Lyrics
(VERSE 1) On the first day You left the grave. Opened the door through which we're saved. Three days before, they laid You in. Never expecting to see You again. How can we ignore the fact, That after you were buried, You came right back. Fulfillment so exact. You came right back. (VERSE 2) It's no longer a day just like the rest. It's changed. It has been blessed. Sundays now have been set apart. With transformation like at the start. You lightened the dark on that first day. You gave us life in the very same way. On resurrection Sunday! Let's fall on our knees and pray. (CHORUS) How many more souls will You claim? From the lame. You've saved us by Your name. With a fire burning far beyond it's flame. People saved from all our shame. Doesn't matter what some might think. Their thoughts are dark like a broken link. Thrown to the bottom where all will sink. Eternity lost forever in just a wink. (VERSE 3) Sundays will never be viewed the same. Now that I've trusted in Your name. Just knowing You made that sacrifice. How can I go on pursuing vice? No more staying in that bed. When I can be praising You instead. Communion with wine and bread. Your Word filling my head. (VERSE 4) Doesn't matter when we give You praise. Saturday, Sunday or all other days. Singing songs that You are Lord. And Your gospel can't be ignored. You've given freedom, You paid the bail. You opened the door of our jail. With hands pierced by nails. Praise God, You have prevailed. (CHORUS) Your word climbed up the highest peeks. Delved into the deepest seas. Crossed the hottest arid planes. Survived the drought and the stormin' rains. It dipped into the lowest valleys. It withstood the coldest glacier alleys. Overcame the raging flood, As it spread with the Savior's blood!
