It's only natural that we enjoy being elevated, placed in a high position, and receive honor and glory for our achievements. Heck, we even enjoy receiving praise when it's not even due us. It's a rare person who basks in the spotlight who doesn't receive some type of enjoyment for being there. Not only do we crave prestige but we even thrive upon being around other people who are recognized for their acheivements and place in society! We are natural born 'glory hogs'.
One of the areas in which we have absolutely no control of, and cannot... or should not, receive recognition for is in the area of who we are born to or when and where we might have been born. Those areas are dictated by circumstances far beyond our personel control. And yet we take pride in, and even brag about who we were born to, who we are related to, where we were born, etc, etc. skripture says that "pride is the root of all evil" and we prove it true in this area every time we swell with pride for receiving recognition where it isn't due.
Remarkably, there is one historic person who actually had the choice of who, when and where He would be born! For Him, it was not a matter of accepting whatever birth would be His... these circumstances were totally under His control. But equally amazing was His decision on the 'type' of His birthplace! Instead of following the normal tendencies of sinful mankind, this person... this Jesus, did something totally unexpected... He chose an extremely low and humble upbringing. No palaces or prestigious family for Jesus. He not only ignored that option, but also expressed disdain for those who live that way... or are even impressed by it! His respect didn't carry into areas where respect is not due.
To society's high and prestigious, Jesus was little more than a curiousity or a novelty. They didn't (and still don't) fully understand His message; they misunderstood His lifestyle; and they totally misinterpeted the miracles He performed. To the masses Jesus held the promise of being the 'conquering Messiah', but to the upper elite, He was little more than a court magician. Still, they could perceive that much of what He said was threatening to their own way of life. He wasn't in to materialism nor did He elevate them or respect them for what they owned and who they might be.
Unlike the rest of us, Jesus was not One to hold high convictions in one area of life but apply a different standard in other areas. He didn't choose wealth and esteem for Himself, nor did He pick those traits in the people He kept company with... His chosen 'friends'. The people who became His friends were the common, everyday people who normally have little impact on the world in any noticable, major way. They were folks whom Jesus reached out to and brought into His world... and the gospel which He preached. And because of it, their world was turned upside down and forever impacted beyond what they could have ever imagined! They became not only His friends, but also His loyal followers as well. They were even willing to lay down their life for Him!
To be a friend and follower of Jesus happens by invitation only. The statement "come and follow me" was verbally extended to His apostles and has been given through the Holy Spirit ever since. When any one of us turn from our everyday life and accept Jesus to reign as Lord, we are responding to His invitation given directly to our heart and soul.
(Verse 1)
He could have been born in palaces. With riches and royalty.
But He chose to be born with humbleness in poverty.
The King of all Kings came as low as low can be.
And He never gave in.
(Verse 2)
Oh Andrew and Peter, sons of Zebedee. Come and follow me.
I have a job for you to do that the whole world will see.
No longer fishing with your nets. You'll fish to set men free.
And He called them friend.
(Chorus 1)
Where did their power come from? As they follow after God's Holy Son.
Aren't these just simple and common men?
How can they be preachin' the Word? Spreading the best message we've ever heard.
Following Christ has caused them to transcend.
(Verse 3)
Yes God can use ordinary people like you and me. Christ says it's a fact.
He accomplishes much with everyday folks. What we do does not distract.
Fishermen. Carpenters. Laborers. He can use us where we're at.
And He welcomes us in.
(Verse 4)
It doesn't matter how little you have, or how great your sins.
He chose us right where we are... and then made us His friends.
Knowing all the things we've done... and yet He don't condemn.
And He gives peace within.
(Chorus 2)
Just like when He entered and walked on this earth.
Called us back to Him and gave us new birth.
Let the Messiah reign and take away your strife.
But please leave your ego and pride at the door! Riches of gold won't be needed no more.
As we come from every low walk of life.
(Ending)
Messiah!! Shepherd of the flock. We are Your sheep.
Messiah!! Shepherd of the flock. We are Your sheep.
