Father; mother; son; daughter; king; queen; Mr; Mrs... a person's title explains much about their position in society's hierarchial structure. A title instantly relays important information about that person... and all of us have more than one title. Without even meeting the person, our titles can communicate our gender, our status, our profession; our respect... or lack of respect; our ranking; our geneology and much, much other pertinent information. Some titles we are born with; others we earn or work for; while some are given to us with no regard as to whether we desire it or not.
It is only fitting that the most important person who ever lived should have a multitude of titles portraying his greatness, his lineage, his deity and many of his ministerial triumphs. The titles of Jesus are unique among men in that many were actually given him milleniums before he was born into our world. These highly deskriptive titles told much about Jesus, the Messiah who would come; fullfill prophecy; live sinlessly; suffer; shed his blood; defeat death; make atonement; ascend to heaven and reign as king of all! Ironically, many of his titles were impossible to understand or fully comprehend until he physically entered our world and gave illumination with his life to their full meaning and implication.
For centuries prior, the prophets had foretold of the Messiah to come. God had given visions, dreams and special insight concerning His coming Son... often to the non-comprehension of these humble servants of truth. Amongst the deskriptive terminology regarding the coming Saviour were various titles which helped broadcast the nature and ministry of history's most important individual. In a similar way to when the angelic hosts sang praises at our Lord's birth, these pre-encarnate titles also sing out to his greatness and universal importance!
Many of our Lord's titles can only be known and appreciated once we as individuals are born anew and become part of his bride, the church. We only know what the "Bread of Life" is after we taste of it. The "Prince of Peace" cannot be felt if he doesn't rule within our heart. The "Light of the World" will not be seen by eyes which are blind. He cannot be our "Shepherd of the Sheep" unless we become part of his beloved flock. The list goes on and on, portraying a savior dear to the heart of those belonging to Christ but not understood by hearts which will not soften and turn! He becomes our trustworthy "Cornerstone" but remains a stumbling "Capstone" to the unrepentant. To some he is "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" while to others he is "the Punisher and Destroyer" of the wicked.
As we grow to love Christ in greater capacity and devote more of our self and life to serving him, he takes a more prominent place in our heart. The titles he holds become more enduring as our understanding of him increases. And for those titles which might be shared with other people in our life, his become predominate and overule by virtue of his importance, position and being. We might be under the rule of earthly leaders but it is his supreme rule which is where our devotion and trust ultimately lie. There might be earthly presidents, governors and kings, but it is our risen Lord who is the only "king of kings!"
John 'the beloved' explained when compiling his gospel account that "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." In a similar way "Titles" chooses but only a few of the most fitting and colorful titles which describe Jesus. There are many others which are not included in the song, but if they had been used, our four minute song could have easily become a forty minute piece.
The subtitle to this song is "Bread of Life" which refers to a reference which Jesus made of h
(VERSE 1)
Who is this man? Who can this be? He calms the storms. He subdues the raging sea.
Even the wind and waves respond to His voice. Because He's come gives us reason to rejoice.
Time, space, vast universe bows down to Your desire.
You have authority to make events happen and transpire. Your thunderous power sets our hearts on fire.
(VERSE 2)
You know all our thoughts and everything we'll do. There's not a deed so secret we can hide it away from You.
Even the fish, birds and beasts are subject to Your will. Everything that lives must obey and be still.
All matter and spirit worlds are part of Your domain. The blind can see, the deaf hear, You give strength to the lame.
Your name is lifted higher than our voices can proclaim.
(VERSE 3)
Who do you say I am? His gaze turned right at me. God's spirit opened my eyes so I could clearly see.
I looked at all He said and did. I sized up all the facts. He could only be the promised one with fulfillment so exact.
I said You are the Christ, the only son of God. I knew I answered correct and that all others were just frauds.
I fell at his feet and worshiped as angels did applaud.
(CHORUS)
I know who you are.
You are the Bread of Life. You are the Lamb of God.
You are the Prince of Peace. You are the Light of the World.
You are the Door and the Gate. You are the Great I Am. The mighty and eternal God.
You are the Beginning and the End. You are the Bright and Morning Star.
You are the Shepherd of the Sheep. You are the Lamb which was Slain.
You are the Savior of the World. You are the Judge of all Living and the Dead.
You are the Truth
(VERSE 4)
Until Jesus gave us life, we were dead in our sins. All we ate was food for that dead one deep within.
It couldn't sustain the soul like His righteous bread which feeds. Or quench our thirst with living water which meets our needs.
We gain no sustainous through any other source. Only He can feed the soul and serve the entire course.
Appetites and hunger are severed through divorce.
(VERSE 5)
Lord, you have so many titles. All show how great you are. You're king of kings and lord of lords. You rule above the stars.
You are friend to the weak and you comfort the sick. You are worthy of all praise and deserve our worship.
You've been sent by the Father to obey and do His will. skriptures give a testimony that only you could fulfill.
No matter what comes our way, our hope is in you still.
(CHORUS)
All Godly things find their fruition in You.
You are the Manna from Above. You are God Revealed in the Flesh.
You are the True and Living Vine. You are the Foundation and the Cornerstone.
You are the Only Begotten of the Father. You are the Author and the Finisher of our Faith.
You are Head of the Church, Your bride. You are the Heir of All Things.
You are the Great and High Priest. You are the Resurrection and the Life.
You are Jesus Christ our Lord. You are the Bread of Life giving eternity to all who ask.
You are the Truth. You are the Truth. You are the Truth.
