Story behind the song
"Let's judge the accused! Take it to trial! What's the verdict? Innocent? Guilty! He stands condemned!" Accusations are a part of life which we've all experienced and stressed over. They happen when we're guilty and deserve punishment but they also happen when we're innocent and are being wrongfully accused. In the book of Job we are introduced to a man whom was known as the "most righteous man in all the earth", yet this man is falsely accused both by his friends and neighbors and within the heavenly realms! As a direct result of these accusations, he suffers physically, emotionally and is burdened with unimaginable distress. If there was ever a man who appears to have reason to question God's goodness, it is this man of Job! By reading the book of Job we are priviledged to get a rare glimpse into the very throneroom of God and the judgments which transpire there. This heavenly court is far from being a solitary place where God sits alone and rules from a distance. On the contrary, much activity and comings-and-goings take place there. We see that angels are present and give record of their travails throughout the lands. Even the fallen archangel Satan has direct access to the ear of God with unrighteous, pessimistic accusations... he is thusly referred to as the "great accuser". We learn that Satan "roams through the earth and travels back and forth in it." He attempts to sway God in his dealings with mortal man by putting into question both the motives of man and the actions of God. With dignity God tolerates this unrighteousness but ultimately has the final say. We see Satan portrayed as a tool in bringing about God's sovereign will and purposes. Satan attempts to break and destroy Job by taking away his family; his health; his possessions and everything else he holds dear. The only area that is not taken from Job is his very life. Satan's premise is that if Job loses all good things in his life, then his true character will emerge and he'll prove that his devotion to God was only based upon physical blessings and richs. Eventually he will curse God and prove that Satan knows more than God himself! After things heat-up, Job's friends come to mourn and comfort him in his time of distress. It doesn't take long for their true motives to emerge as they question and accuse Job, reflecting perspectives quite similar to those of Satan. As they preach to Job it becomes obvious they have very little understanding of the one true God and His merciful ways in dealing with mankind. They are no comfort at all to Job... they only add to his torment and pain! Instead of feeling relief, Job ends up having to defend himself. Where Satan accused Job's inner motives, his friends challenge and put on trial his unknown sins which surely must be there, or why else would he suffer in the way he is. But Job is certain of his pure devotion to God and of his lack of impure desires and actions. No matter what accusations his accusers can muster, it does not change the facts as Job knows them to be... he has done nothing wrong to deserve the terrible situation he is in! His innocence is not merely in his mind but is a positive certainty... his actions are beyond reproach! No crime has been committed! As we see the workings of God and Satan in dealing with Job, we are helped in understanding our own trials and temptations. How many conflicts in our own life are we responsible for? How many are the result of forces and situations which we have no idea are taking place? These are questions which Jesus also dealt with in his earthly ministry and spreads further light on by his indwelling spirit. In Job we aren't given a complete answer for why the righteous might suffer or why the wicked might prosper, but we do see that God is in control and is very aware of our circumstances. Many viewpoints regarding God are presented in Job. So much so that a danger to the casual reader is to jumble and confuse the correct revelations with the e
Lyrics
In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he shunned evil and feared the Lord. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. He offered up prayers to God whenever his children would party and feast. The LORD asked Satan, that vile old serpent, "Have you noticed Job, my good and faithful servant?" "He's the finest man I know in the whole wide earth. A man of integrity from the day of his birth." "Though you may try to cause him harm, He turns his back on evil… much to your alarm." "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan did reply. "His righteousness I deny." His wicked tongue hissed with words of a skeptic, "Your hedge around his home protects like antiseptic." "You have blessed all the work of his sod-darkened hands. His flocks and his herds are spread throughout the land." "Stretch out your reach and strike everything that's his. Surely he'll curse you to your face and change his emphasis." The LORD told that old devil, "Very well, he's yours. We'll see if he endures." So Satan struck him with his vilest deadly blow. Stripped him of all the good things that God had ever bestowed. Job lost his entire family and all his great vast wealth. He was left with nothing at all, not even his very health. Job got up and tore his robe and shaved bald his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and with humbleness he said: "Naked I came into this world and naked I will depart. The LORD gives and the LORD takes away; the name of the LORD I’ll exalt." In all these terrible trials, Job never sinned at all. Praise God! He sat in filthy ashes when he was greeted by three friends. Who had traveled for some distance to mourn and offer amends. No comfort came from the three as they offered the same explanation. "Suffering always comes from our sins," was their proclamation. "Surely you've wronged God and sinned," they all did accuse. "This is your punishment from heaven," spitefully they abused. Accusations flowed from every side. Coming from friends filled with pride. They quickly spoke without knowing all that God was doing. He works in ways we know nothing about so speaking for Him is misconstruing. The three made a mock trial, Job interigated like a thief. He desperately asserts and protests, proclaims innocence beyond belief. "Give up... Curse God and die!" even his foolish wife did cry. "Why accept only good and not bad?" Job humbly replied. Man of character with integrity on trial. Maintaining innocence with complete denial. Finally a better perspective through Elihu appears. With amazing insight and wisdom beyond his years. He said... “Good and bad happen through no fault of our own. But we should trust in God even when answers are not shown.” “We don't serve the Lord to see how many riches He gives. But with love we fall at His feet because of who He is.” “Suffering often helps to refine all those who do belong. Used by our loving father to chastise and make us strong.” God does marvelous things which we'll never understand at all. Then out of the storm the LORD asked Job, “Who is this that darkens my counsel? So many words, so little knowledge. Now it's time for you just to answer.” “Where were you when I laid earth's foundation or separated heaven from land? Have you seen the gates of death’s shadow? Tell me, if you understand.” “Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up dominion on earth? Who endowed man's heart with wisdom or gave knowledge at his birth?” “Does the eagle soar at your command and build his nest on high?” “Will you accuse the Lord Almighty?” None answered from the North to the South. Job cried, "LORD I am unworthy!" He hung his head and c
