Story behind the song
I wrote the song five years ago, and it has morphed significantly since that time. I sang it as a duet with my wife at my wedding, so the song has a lot of emotional impact for me. The words are mostly taken from the Bible's most erotic book, Song of Songs, AKA Song of Solomon. The song was the last one to be recorded on the CD Storybook. Nothing was really working very well until the saxophone player came in. A close friend of mine, I had booked her without having anything specific for her to play when she got to my studio. (Normally I write out full notation for my musicians, then let them improvise after they've recorded what they were reading off the sheet.) So that night I stayed up until almost 3 a.m., composing the part that she played flawlessly the next day. It was then that everything else in the song took shape, being built around the passion that the saxophone had evoked.
Lyrics
I have waited for you I have waited for you I have waited for you With holy expectancy, craving your love for me I have waited for you I have waited for you I have waited for you With holy expectancy, craving your love I have hope in my heart as if something is calling me Drawing me out of my chamber, awaking me I arose to Through the watches of night Search for you; I have searched for your love And though I'm weak I'll I am weak but I'll Look till the day breaks and night shadows flee away I can hear you You say, 'Here is my love' Whispering you 'I have waited for .' Are inviting 'Will you come with me,' Come to my garden, come Awaken my love; steal my heart For my love is strong; it burns like flame Storms and floods can't quench love Rivers cannot wash it away I am longing for you I am longing for you I am longing for you With passion that's burning Can't sleep 'cause I'm dreaming of you I am longing for you I am longing for you I am longing for you With passion that's burning Can't sleep 'cause I dream In the night I am hoping that you will be coming To take me away, take me away I am yours, I am only for you I keep hoping, You will take me away My heart's burning Like a candle It burns in the night, shining out as I'm searching Leave your hiding Will you show me your face Show your lovely Let me hear your voice Face, one glance and, One look and Your eyes overwhelm me, your eyes I slept in the night, but my heart was awake Listen, my lover is knocking and calling So I woke and I cried, 'Have you come here for me,' But it seemed you had gone, so my heart sunk inside me Said, 'Where's my beloved gone?' So my friends asked me how my beloved is better Than all of the others that I could pursue after I said she's radiant, lovely and strong As fair as the moon and as bright as the dawn Like a lily in thorns or a dove among the ravens Is how she appears among all other maidens Her hair is like gold, and her eyes are like jewels Her mouth has a sweetness that nothing compares to And this love has stolen my heart And this love has stolen my heart My love, this love has stolen my heart You have stolen my heart again (4x) I have waited for you I have waited for you I have waited for you I have waited, I have waited for you
