Beware of the soul thieves!
I wrote this one many moons ago... and had forgotten about it till thumbing though an old songbook. Thought it deserved a re-take!
Stand and Deliver (The Highwayman Song)
© Adrian J Pratt 1978
Traveling down this lonely highway
Pockets full of pearls and gold
Pockets full of secrets I’ve never told a soul.
Heading for my destination
Riding on until I reach the celebration
If I get past the highwayman hiding by the road.
Stand and deliver, he wants to steal your secrets,
Stand and deliver, he’ll threaten you.
Stand and deliver, for he’s taking he’s not giving,
Don’t let him steal away your soul.
Riding ever onward,
Through the dark and lonely night
I’ll be so glad when it becomes daylight
Keep looking over my shoulder
Watching for a snare
I’ve got to avoid the traps highwaymen prepare
Stand and deliver, he wants to steal your secrets,
Stand and deliver, he’ll threaten you.
Stand and deliver, for he’s taking he’s not giving,
Don’t let him steal away your soul.
Got to keep on traveling
Traveling down the road
No I mustn’t stop traveling
Let no one take away
Let no one steal away
Let no one steal away my gold
So when you feel as though you’re traveling,
Down a road hedged with fear,
When you think your travels will never end,
Ride straight on through the darkness,
And don’t get caught in the robber’s snare,
And empty threats are all you’ ever hear.
Stand and deliver, he wants to steal your secrets,
Stand and deliver, he’ll threaten you.
Stand and deliver, for he’s taking he’s not giving,
Don’t let him steal away your soul.
