For NaSoAlMo, I wanted to have at least one slow song, and this is it. It is the story of a washed up musician who got caught up in minor celebrity and intoxicants and lost everything. He has been sober for a while and wants to get involved with someone he has seen in the bar he works. He very tentatively tells her his story, fully expecting to get rejected. This song is not autobiographical; I have been happily married for 23 years.
I saw you here last Thursday night / Ladies’ two for one
Was going to buy a round for you / But you’d already gone
And so I took the long walk home / And try to clear my head
But as I faced the night alone / I thought of you instead
Chorus:
Just like me it seems you’ve seen
Your dream dashed in the dirt
I have found it helps to have
Someone to share your hurt
I listen good and I could be
That someone if you like
And I could meet you here again
Next week on Ladies’ Night
You may have heard my name before / I was a local star
They’d come from miles around to hear me / sing and play guitar
Then things I took, took over / I Lost my family, job and friends
A short career, a year and change / From beginning to the end
Chorus
Now I’ve been straight for 20 months / I’m here ‘most every night
Tending bar and cleaning up / I guess I’m doin’ alright
But loneliness is stronger / Than all those things I overcame’
And we can spend some time together / If you should feel the same
Chorus
