Uptempo love song --old school soul. Produced by Tom Day for Wirebender Productions. Jack Smith plays acoustic guitar, Scott Olson plays drums. I play electric guitar, 12-string, and bass.
I wanted to write a love song about the woman who is now my wife, but I didn’t want to write a sappy ballad. The best alternative, it seemed to me, was to come up with a Motown-style song. I based it off of a Four Tops song, but it kind of went in another direction. This was originally done with the Hidden Persuaders, and I wrote up some horn parts for the song that sounded really tasty. The horns were long gone by the time this version was recorded. They are replaced with a 12-string guitar part, which gives the song more of a British Invasion sound.
Never dreamed of a perfect day
That was something I just didn’t do
Never thought I could feel this way
Until the time I met you
You caught me unaware
Right between the eyes
In an unguarded moment
You took me by surprise
Our future wore a smiling face
We would give each other our all
Still a part of me kept my place
Waiting for the ax to fall
It was nothing you did or said
Just my experience from way back when
In an unguarded moment
Had I set myself up again?
Never was a blessed one
Just a face in the crowd
But since I found that you’re the one
I walk like a man so proud
Now perfect days aren’t guaranteed
There’s always something to make us blue
But every night before I go to sleep
I smile at the thought of you
You caught me unaware
When I thought I had nothing to give
In an unguarded moment
You taught me how to live
