A West Texas ghost story
A colaboration with Robert George of Cochise Arizona.
Windmills and Rocking Chairs by R George and SJ Harris
I drive out from Amarillo
‘Til I see that grove of willows
and the old windmill that stands on Grandpa’s farm
And even though no wind is blowing
That windmill keeps on going
And scatters all the crows out of the yard
There are two old rockers on the farmhouse porch
And when the day is over they start moving back and forth
Chorus: When sundown rolls across West Texas
A spirit rises in the air
And it blows across this farm lonesome and restless
Moving windmills and rocking chairs
Though these are hard as granite
Grandpa just said, “Damit
We’ll just raise our crops on rocks and sand”
And when he wed the baker’s daughter
He swore Hell or high water
Wouldn’t move him off this lonely stretch of land
Tonight the leaves are still when that windmill starts to spin
Those empty chairs start rocking but it’s not the wind
Chorus: When sundown rolls across West Texas
A spirit rises in the air
And it blows across this farm lonesome and restless
Moving windmills and rocking chairs
Music..
Bridge: I come here to grieve
To chase away the crows
Sweep away the leaves
From the crosses and the stones
Heaven doesn’t lie way beyond the stars
It never was that high
It’s right here on this farm
Chorus: When sundown rolls across West Texas
A spirit rises in the air
And it blows across this farm lonesome and restless
Moving windmills and rocking chairs
Moving windmills and rocking chairs
