Story behind the song
John Daubert handed the CD of Opening Day to Phillies great, Greg Luzinski two days before the 2008 Phillies home opener. After listening in his car that night, Luzinski gave it Chris Long the next day, in the front office. After Chris listened, she gave it to the audio director, (sorry for no name yet). It was played without any of the three Just Plain Folks" members knowing about at first, until Daubert's granddaughter, (Alexis), called from her center field seat to ask her pop pop if he sang a baseball song about opening day. She recognized his voice, as did her mom and boyfriend.
A few years earlier:
Scott W. Campbell wrote the song, and recorded his demo version to have "Just Plain Folks" members hear it. Daubert commented about maybe getting another singer if wanting to do it up in a master recording version by Mike Caro. Mike Caro then suggested to Scott that Daubert sing it, being a former baseball player with a certain sound that Caro thought would be good for the song. Scott agreed and asked Daubert to sing it at Mike Caro's home studio in Staten Island, NY. John Daubert lives just outside of Philly in South Jersey. Scott Campbell lives in Florida. Scott has not met Mike or John yet. But Scott made it possible for John and his wife to hear him sing over the loudspeakers at the 2009 Phillies home opener, the year after it first played. Mike Caro has been home bound for the most part with a probable neurological disease that has been 16 years undiagnosed, but hopes of finding out the disease is getting closer, (after 57 doctors)! So, Mike couldn't think about going. Not yet anyway. The song plays every year at The Phillies Home Opener! Not bad for three online friends because of "Just Plain Folks", Brian Austin Whitney, founder, which Daubert has performed at JPF showcases for Brian's events.
