A song inspired by the music and lyrics of John Foxx
This was inspired by the experience of driving back from Glasgow to Edinburgh on a hot July night after a John Foxx & Louis Gordon gig.
I cannot sing to save myself, I have the sort of voice that couldn't carry a tune if it had handles on it. Therefore, in the chorus where I attempt to sing, the voice is very heavily treated with reverb, chorus and vocoder to disguise how truly awful it is!
The night air is warm here
the windows are rolled down
cities of highrise neon
shine and sparkle all around.
Flying over, driving under
traffic rumble, the only sound
speeding through a sea of darkness
we never wave, we never drown.
City of the neon darkness
beating like the heart of night
the sky above is black and starless
the streets aglow with electric light.
Mirrored in the plate glass windows
mannequins stare back at us
do they see us, can they hear us?
they always look but they never touch.
Out of town now into the country
a world of shadow, so dark and hushed
landscape blurrred by our wheels in motion
why are we always in such a rush?
City of the neon darkness
beating like the heart of night
the sky above is black and starless
the streets aglow with electric light.
