Story behind the song
This was another step forward in my development as a songwriter. This came from taking a good hard look at the 'script' we as humans follow for our behavior, and how we lack the creativity to come up with new responses to situations, unless we train that part of ourselves. It was also born out of my new process of turning the radio off when I drive and listening to my ideas instead.
Lyrics
We've been in combat too many years On auto-pilot with rage and fear We go in circles, with half our minds Flying these patterns, we're flying blind It's like we're reading from a screenplay written down at birth One page to repeat for all our days on earth Always one answer for every problem, thoughtlessly arranged How bad do you want it all to change? It's about time we learn from each other Time to not make another Turn around the cycle of pain and sorrow It's about time; forget retribution Time to find resolution What we say today will echo back tomorrow I like to test you; you hold it in I push you 'til you jump out of your skin We're a broken record – in a digital age What will it take 'til we turn the page? It's like I'm reading from a screenplay written down at birth I tear that page and crumple it – that's what it's worth I don't feel vindicated; I'm only feeling strange I'm terrified of how I might change It's about time we learn from each other Time to not make another Turn around the cycle of pain and sorrow It's about time; forget retribution Time to find resolution What we learn today turns the page tomorrow It's time to really read the screenplay we've carried 'round since birth And cross out those old, useless lines – that do nothing but hurt It's time to ask hard questions – why we act the way we do And where are we really going to?
