Based on the story of Bill Dunlop; sailor, husband, Mainer. . . missed. I heard him speak at my middle school after his successful solo-trip on the "Enchantress" (a 32ft boat) and his solo, trans-Atlantic journey in the "Wind's Will". (the 9 footer) Bill had hoped to better his quest in 1984 and make a round-the-world trek in "Wind's Will" but was lost at sea shortly after leaving Aitutaki, in the Cook Islands on his way to Australia. I have a bit more information that I've gathered over the years - but I am unsure of it's validity.
V1
Pam kissed Bill and bid him Godspeed
As he took to the waves in a 9 foot skiff
From Portland Harbor in the month of June
Hoping one small engine would keep him adrift
V2
The Wind's Will rolled in billows blue
Those cold gulf waters cast up their mist
Safe sail all the way to Aitutaki
Where warmer waters lulled him to rest
Chorus:
Devil Sea
Leagues of mystery
Might the surge bring an answer?
Devil Sea
Kicks up a squall; a tidal tempest dancer
. . . And leaves your life in her wake
V3
Enchantress held your dreams in check
For the bold and brave there's no other way
To some a fool's errand, don’t press your luck
Those vast ocean waters will always betray
Chorus:
Devil Sea
Leagues of mystery
Might the surge bring an answer?
Devil Sea
Kicks up a squall; a tidal tempest dancer
. . . And leaves your life in her wake
Bridge:
Repent, dear Bill, turn back while you can
Devil Sea - can't tame her
Rue the day, dear Bill, or you’re a lost man
And we will surely blame her (repeat lines 1,2,3)
Chorus
V1 line 1 & 2
