Story behind the song
I've heard from a variety of different people that writing poetry for me is intimidating as hell. I finally "got it" for the first time when a friend of mine sat down at my synthesizer and I realized how much more instinctive and gorgeous his interaction with the music was than mine. The moment when he looked up at me and explained, "I can't read music -- I'm just playing around with the chords!" floored me. There was a moment when I thought, "I'm never playing anything around him again...." But how many people have had that reaction when I hand them a sonnet? Now I get it. And hence, this song. Lyrics
This version of "My Virtuoso" is instrumental only, but lyrics do exist, as listed below. ---------------------------------------- Don't take this away from me-- I need my voice tonight, Chord on chord and note on note To shed an inner light. You can breathe it; you can feel it, You are bright and free. I have lost my faith today. Don't take this from me. Don't take this away from me-- My heart is full of fear. Harmony and melody Are how I stop each tear. You can breathe it; you can feel it. You can't understand. Living stone, don't stop the sculptor From lifting her hand. Play, but please, do understand that I'm not Feeling this like you. You reach out so magically-- naturally-- Nothing to compare to. I wish I were like you... and Don't take this away from me. Don't bring the silence down. Don't make me play hesitantly When you are around. You can breathe it; you can feel it; Things I didn't know. I was brave, but now I'm timid, My virtuoso. You'll hear this and hear all my mistakes, hear this and hear all my mistakes.
