Just seven months ago, head of Government Oversight Committee Henry Waxman challenged President Bush’s claim that beneficiaries of Medicaid’s prescription drug plan would, in fact NOT be paying $24 a month, but would actually be paying $29 dollars a month. Now THAT’S oversight. Heckuva Job Waxy.
But today, the canary was singing a different tune, adding his signature to a bill that blocks the purchase of lower cost prescription drugs from far away places like Canada, because they say they cannot guarantee the safety of imported medicines.
Unlike our own FDA which can ensure us that 3 million people have already eaten chicken that was contaminated with the same antifreeze in the pet food debacle. The same FDA that oversaw 27,785 Vioxx deaths from sudden heart attacks and cardiac arrests.
And the same FDA that oversees more than 12,000 prescriptions, with a staff less than 3000.
And yes the same FDA that has the power of 65 pound weakling, wrestling 800 pound gorilla, and absolutely No Power to recall food and/or drug, on its own. All recalls? Are done a “voluntary basis” …did you even know that!?
The now Democrat controlled congress has shown it’s true colors, wielding the same reckless abandon as their predecessors, neither with a plan in sight.
Exporting our jobs strengthens our economy; but importing grandma’s Happy Pills from Saskatoon is a little dicey, huh?
There is no other industry that have spent more money lobbying politicians than drug companies and have over 1,200 lobbyists in D.C.
Edward Kennedy was a pivotal figure in blocking this bill, and is a chief author in the overhaul of the FDA. He is also fifth in money from lobbyists with $226,000. Not a lot of money, but consider the What If this had been an election year …
Henry Waxman championed affordable prescription prices as Chair of the Energy & Commerce Committee, but where are your Gold Stars now?!
Here’s Waxman discussing his beloved FDA:

…now let’s go make them in charge of our over-priced prescription drugs!
