Coming home from the air force and settling down to family life. I don't go for noisy pubs and clubs but prefer a peaceful stroll in the hills. This particular area (Weardale) is rich in minerals which have been mined for centuries, the area is riddled with abandoned mines and quarries. If you know where to look you can still pick up beautiful chrystals of fluorite, quartz, galena and others (I don't know what they're all called).
Lyrics
In the fields of Germany we watched the eastern skies
For aeroplanes and missiles and parachuting spies
With harriers and fighting men we practiced for the worst
If someone pressed that button then we hoped that we’d be first
Though nothing ever happened, no planes or missiles came
We hid that we were frightened and stood ready all the same
I took my place amongst them and I dreamed of leaving here
Of pretty girls and Durham town and walking by the wear
Now I walk the hills of Weardale to soak up all the peace
And look for chunks of fluorspar, to polish up and keep
And when it was all over and I came home again
I played my part as Dad and gave the world two fine young men,
I hope that they learned well from me and live their lives in peace
And never have to worry when they turn their faces east.
Now I walk the hills of Weardale to soak up all the peace
And look for chunks of fluorspar, to polish up and keep
Now I walk the hills of Weardale to soak up all the peace
And look for chunks of fluorspar, to polish up and keep
I visit all the empty mines that used to thrive round here
And cool my feet at Stanhope in the waters of the wear
Now I walk the hills of Weardale to soak up all the peace
And look for chunks of fluorspar, to polish up and keep
