Story behind the song
Icepac and Sknoblogger were having the best tour of their professional career together, tearing up venues all across New South Wales. The had knocked audiences dead in Wagga Wagga, Cootamundra, and Gooloogong. They were looking forward to a prestigious gig in the Canowindra Royal Hotel, where they would share the stage with Trio Apoplectic, a group of musicians with which Remote Possibility had long shared mutual respect and admiration.
As part of media campaign to raise the profile of the appearance, Icepac and Sknoblogger were to make their entrance into the self-described 'The Balloon Capital of Australia' in a hot air balloon.
However, there was a terrible mishap. Just as they were crossing the Morebel reservoir east of town, a freak windstorm drove them far from their destination, out onto the ocean, depositing them on a tiny, uncharted island between the Australian mainland and Tasmania.
They spent the next 14 years on this island. When they weren’t struggling for survival, they worked on this song. When they were at last rescued, and recorded this song, fans would often ask them why they named the song after Canowindra and not the island where it was composed. Tiring of the repeated explanations, they put the answer in the FAQ on their webpage, and after that they would refer people to that. It read in part:
“Our struggle for survival was so intense, that it’s painful to even discuss it. The entire time we were there, we maintained our tenuous grip on sanity, and life, by talking, thinking and dreaming about Canowindra. Why should we pay homage to a terrible, traumatizing experience? We prefer to focus on hope and optimism.”
