Every town needs culture, even a scrappy little place like Emeryville, and Maestro Kim Stoatman is lending his prodigious talents to the Emeryville Pops. Ummm, 'prodigious'? I don't think the locals quite agree...

Emeryville is a real town, squeezed between Oakland and Berkeley on the east shore of San Francisco Bay. There really was a Native American shellmound there (immortalized in a street name). And it really is a scrappy, working-class place, now gentrifying with a huge Ikea and other alleged goodies. But a lot of old-timers, and their kids and grandkids, still consider it their 'hood. Kim Stoatman is not a real person, but not at all far from conductors I have worked for.
