Story behind the song
A fan speaks
You've come to the right place if you want to hear about "Underwater Groove." I remember the events like it was yesterday... it was back in 1957 or 1986, around then. I was waiting tables at the Sounds of Brasil (a.k.a SOB's) club/restaurant in NYC, along with Icepac, Sknoblogger, and Headphone L. The twist was that we all sang, and it got incorporated into our job duties. We got to meet and sometimes sing with Clapton, the Talking Heads, many top Salsa, Afro-Cuban and Zydeco acts etc.). In addition, we were called on to write and perform songs sometimes when celebrities dined in.
I remember one time the famous drag queen Rudy Giuliani (see, for example, http://youtube.com/watch?v=4IrE6FMpai8 ) dropped in for a dessert.
We didn't have enough notice to write something for the occasion, but we did a stunning a cappella rendition of Billy Joel's "Always A Woman To Me." "She'll carelessly cut you, and laugh while you're bleeding" - that's Rudy all the way, LOL!
This song came about because famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau had a reservation for dinner with Joey Heatherton. We wanted to do something special for the old goat. We started to work on this song, but unfortunately we were short-staffed that day, and I was pulled away to do salad prep, so I wasn't involved in the writing or performance of that song. This has always been one of my great professional disappointments.
Icepac and Sknoblogger are still working together under the name "Possibly Removed" or something like that. Headphone L is making waves in the Sao Paulo scene (http://www.myspace.com/headphonel). I've been doing alright too. Shortly after I left SOB's I joined the Buffalo Springsteen, and I've been busy ever since.
