Story behind the song
This version of this song is dedicated to my brothers and sisters in the little congregation of Waikiki Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Andrew Large. My wife and I visited this church (only blocks from the Waikiki strip) in April of 2006. At the end of the service (after some moving "hula worship" and a relevant message) the whole congregation stood, joined hands, and sang "Blest Be The Tie That Binds"... it brought back a flood of warm childhood memories from my years at Northgate Baptist Church up in Edmonton. (I guess it's a Baptist tradition?!) As I thought about this experience back home I was struck by the incompleteness of John Fawcett's 1782 Hymn. Is that all there is to being a Christian? Hanging out and sharing the load? I added the chorus to charge us up to get out into the world and share what we've got... Anthony Packwood helped a lot in refining my attempt at mutilating this old hymn. And while I know it will no longer "count" as a hymn in our church (or likely be sung at Waikiki Baptist) - I love to use it to charge us up to head out following a Sunday service! John Fawcett is on the cover of Together - can you spot him? (go to www.mikerschuster.com)
Lyrics
VERSE 1: Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. CHORUS: As we hear Your call, and move out from this place May we know Your heart, and live our lives by faith As we spread Your love, as we show Your grace, share Your hope with a world in pain Bless us Lord. VERSE 2: We share each other’s woes, our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. CHORUS TAG: As we spread Your love, as we show Your grace, share Your hope with a world in pain Bless us Lord. Bless us Lord. Bless us Lord.
