This is a HYMN OF ASSURANCE in common meter. I was fooling around with a different chord progression than I've used before, and started playing it in various rhythms. I sort of found my way to this (I think) simple, classy late 19th-century gospel hymn arrangement.

C E7 Am A7
How blessed we are through all the pain
Dm C G G7
That drives us to our knees,
C E7 Am A7
That shows the weakness of our strength,
Dm D G
Proves Your sufficiency.
F G
Through desparation, suffering
C G F
At last we see the truth:
C E7 Am A7
We could not master our own fate --
F G C
That power lives in You.
C E7 Am A7
How blessed we are through all the pain
Dm C G G7
That won't let us forget
C E7 Am A7
This life is just a steppingstone;
Dm D G
You are not finished yet.
F G
You left to build a place for us;
C G F
Why would we want to stay
C E7 Am A7
And let the worries of this world
F G C
Steal our hearts away?
C E7 Am A7
How blessed we are through all the pain,
Dm C G G7
The burden of our cross.
C E7 Am A7
We take it up and journey on
Dm D G
Through Your own strength, in us.
F G
We sing and pray through suffering,
C G F
Then others understand
C E7 Am A7
That stubborn peace in perilous times
F G C
Comes from Your nail-scarred hands.
