Story behind the song
This is a song about my hometown, Madison, Wisconsin. I have done a historical walk through of my life in Mad City with the focus being on Viet Nam an unpopular war that encompassed most of my life while growing up in Madison. I sang this for the first time on 6/29/06 at the University of Madison Terrace open mic. This song went over very well.
Lyrics
Well I grew up in a great place to get down. Right here in Mad City. Where you could drink your beer. Do it all right here, feeling safe in Mad City. The best year of all, 1967 I turned eighteen in Mad City. I rang the Three Bells. Raised a little hell in the streets of Mad City. And through it all I had one hell of a ball, growing up in Mad City. Wanting to be older but still too young Viet Nam it was a pity. I use to wake up to 106 Clyde be rocking Mad City. Hang out on State Street looking at all the chicks And get drunk down at the Nitty Gritty. Johnny Logan’s use to rock all night long To say the least it was gritty. Paul stood tall he told them all And protested here in Mad City. And through it all I had one hell of a ball, fell in love in Mad City. Wanting to be older but still too young Viet Nam it was a pity. In 1968 I picked up the gun. To defend my Mad City. When I retuned I was all messed up. I tried to get it right in Mad City. Now that I’m older I want to be young. Trying to deal with fifty. Young people I see are just like me They’ll be in my place when I’m sixty. And through it all I had one hell of a ball, growing up in Mad City. Wanting to be older but still too young Viet Nam it was a pity. I met the girl I love she was sent from above. She walked into my life when I was twenty. Throughout the years we been right here Making love in Mad City. Well I grew up in a great place to get down Right here in Mad City. Where you can drink your beer. Do it all right here, feeling safe in Mad City. And through it all I had one hell of a ball, fell in love in Mad City. Wanting to be older but still too young and Iraq is now the pity
