Story behind the song
‘Hold on’ has been floating around my heart for a number of years. It began life as a very reflective personal song that I used to focus upon God’s love for me. As the song grew it became more of a congregational song that although not ‘profound’ in any great detail it allows people to take a journey of reflection about who Jesus is and then provides a response. For a number of years I had been praying about the terms/names used for Jesus and had been reflecting upon each in turn – the Son of God who chose to walk upon the earth. The verse encourages me to reflect upon who Jesus is and then moves into the type of response I should take. I read the book ‘Mystery of Salvation’ and was compelled to reflect more about what the cross means to me personally. Paul uses the term mystery at a time when it was used within pagan religious practices. For him it means to disclose, or to make known or reveal the truth of Jesus. As I prayed about this term I felt drawn to reflect about what we do with these truths. The chorus therefore uses the term ‘hold on’, but not at the detriment of sharing them with others, rather as a term to denote that we need to hold on to the truth of the gospel deep within our heart. The bridge always seems to encourage me to focus that it is God who offers us salvation and allows us to stand forgiven but there is a choice, to accept it and turn to him or reject it.
Lyrics
Verse: Emmanuel, you’re with us now. The Son of God you walked the earth. The King of kings you reign on high forever. The Holy one of God, you are our Lord. Pre-chorus: No-one can ever fully know, The wonder of your cross, For there you freely chose to die. Chorus: So we’ll hold on, hold on. Hold on to your love. Hold on, hold on to your truth. We’ll hold on, hold on. Hold on to your love. Hold on, hold on to your truth. Bridge: Your gospel brings us hope, You set the captives free. We stand forgiven by your grace. Your sacrifice brings life, To all who turn to you, And so we’ll live our lives for you
