Story behind the song
Cindy emailed me these lyrics one morning while I was sick laying on the couch and asked me to take a look. One look was all it took to get me off the couch and into the studio to write the music and record a demo.
Lyrics
The Mile Lyrics Cindy Miller Music Allan Truesdell © 2001 Verse His memories were catchin up As he stared in his coffee cup Saltin it with just a tear or two It’s been years since he’d been there Most of it had been stripped bare But there was somethin he just had to do Chorus He took his daddy’s steeled toed shoes And laced em up real good He was happy they didn't fit him Daddy said they never would His crying turned the dust to mud On the floor of that tiny shack Then he began a mile in those shoes And he was never comin back Verse Violence will never make the man Somethin his daddy didn’t understand But he still used it over and over again With angry words and a leather strap He’d leave his mark upon his back And those scars go much deeper than the skin Chorus He took his daddy’s steeled toed shoes And laced em up real good He was happy they didn’t fit him Daddy said they never would His crying turned the dust to mud On the floor of that tiny shack Then he began a mile in those shoes And he was never comin back Bridge Straight ahead he walked that mile Then to the ground he fell Ripped the boots from his tired feet And screamed,(dramatic pause) “GO TO HELL!” Changed Chorus He wore his daddy’s steeled toed shoes And laced em up real good He was happy they didn’t fit him Daddy said they never would His crying turned the dust to mud When he left that tiny shack He’d never again walk a mile in those shoes By the grace of God, he ain’t goin back
