My eldest daughter Hannah.
Standing On Her Own (2004)
For Hannah
The moment that I looked into her eyes
The world I’d always known simply ceased to be
I wrapped my arms around her like a blanket
Held her close and wondered who this child would be
Each night we’d walk the floor and softly sing
And I’d watch those shining blue eyes fade into a baby’s dream
And when she’d light the world up with her laughing
I’d realize that nothing’s half as heavy as it seems
She’s a little girl who needs to know she’s wonderful
She’s wanted and she’s loved and she’ll never be alone
Soon enough I’ll turn around and in her place I’ll see
A woman standing on her own, a woman standing on her own
She’s grown a heart that’s bursting with compassion
She takes more on her shoulders than her little back can hold
Please, my dear, take up your dolls and blankets
Go outside and play awhile, there’s time for growing old
Sometimes I’m not the father I imagined
Sometimes I lose my temper when I see her act like me
I only hope someday she’ll find forgiveness
For all my clumsy trying I just wanted her to see…
CHORUS
At night I stick my head into the bedroom
Softly lit I watch her dream of what the world can be
She’s wrapped around her sister like a blanket
I only hope these children know they’re everything to me
