This song was born from my growing irritation with the role the US plays in the world. The US under Governor Bush, who stole the elections twice, with the help of his mafia-like gang of thugs, including his brother Jeb, has become the bully of the world.
This song opens with President George (Washington), who becomes the first president and who has a vision of greatness for his new country. It ends with President George (Bush) who presides over a country that has countless flaws, but still proudly proclaims it to be the "greatest nation" on earth.
President George once had a dream
Of one nation, under god, a freedom machine
Got up at 4:30, one seven eight nine
The first of his kind, he was a father
To the deaf, dumb and blind
President George once built a town
A beacon of hope for a new dawn, a nation’s crown
A capitol city, designed by a child
A new constitution to guarantee freedom
To all of mankind
He spoke of freedom, of life and liberty
Pursuit of happiness, and equality
“Give me your tired, give me your poor
Send me your homeless, from every shore
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe
Free from oppression, send them to me
I’ll lift my lamp at the Golden Door
This is the greatest of nations for sure!”
But what good is living in the greatest nation
When the true sons and daughters have to live on reservations
When an underground railroad leads to freedom
From the southern cross to the northern star, for the kings and the X-men from afar
President George once went to war
Spreading freedom through the barrel of a gun
Defending your country an ocean away
Against Iraq and Afghanistan, just like Viet Nam
He speaks of freedom, of life and liberty
And pursuit of democracy
“With our superior technology
We’ll win their hearts and minds, you’ll see
We will show the world how it’s done”
But in the mean time the suffering goes on
He can never win his war
But ours is the greatest of nations for sure
But what good is living in the greatest nation
When you cannot escape from the hopeless situation
Of living in the slums and the ghettos
And the only way to survive is by law of drugs and guns and stilettos
And what good is living in the greatest nation
When you can’t pay for healthcare or a decent education
When you’re always just a paycheck away
From not being able to pay for your home or for food on the table
Corruption and conspiracy
Scandalgate and HIV
JFK and MLK
FBI and CIA
KFC and Mickey D
Tainted Blood of Tuskegee
This will be the legacy
Of the land of the free
War on terror. War on drugs
War on freedom, illegal bugs
Right is right and left is wrong
Rainbow 20 million strong
Land of opportunity
And Moral Majority
Sexual hypocrisy
Columbine and Laramie
Stars ‘n Stripes and NRA
Abu Graib, Guantanamo Bay
Thugs and gangsters, MTV
Teenage sex and pregnancy
Purple Mountain Majesty
Violence and illiteracy
Things aren’t always what they seem
Living the American Dream
