Story behind the song
I wrote this song in March 2003 in memory of my wife's sister, Waynette Wong-Chu. One of the highlights of Waynette's life was to carry the Olympic Torch on the Monterey, Calif., leg to Salt Lake City in 2002. Thus, the theme of the song.
Lyrics
YOUR FLAME CARRIES ON
This was your moment of honor, through the streets of Monterey,
As you carried the Olympic torch, on that remarkable day,
A defining point of your short life, as the crowd cheered you on,
You claimed your part of history, as you finished the inspiring run.
The flame carries on, now that the victory is won,
The flame carries on, in the hearts of your daughter and son,
You lived your life with courage and dignity,
Your mission is now complete,
Your flame carries on.
You shared your words of guidance, with your friends and family,
You gave your best in all you pursued, and created a legacy,
You’ve touched our lives in so many ways, that it’s hard to let you go,
But we know you’re with our heavenly Father, and heaven is now your home.
We should all share our lights with each other,
For in sharing our lights our own flames burn brighter.
Your flame carries on, now that the victory is won,
Your flame carries on, in the hearts of your daughter and son,
You lived your life with courage and dignity,
Your mission is now complete,
Your flame carries on, your flame carries on
(But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ - 1 Corinthians 15:55-57) Words and Music By Kevin Inn, March 2003
