Gravity
By Tyson Oakes Zamora
So this is what crumbles…
all hope,
big dreams of little work.
Hard hands reaching quick for hers
and gathering close the children, they stare into the street
you see, the work had all disappeared
and many more towers were falling…
in the diabolic static we all heard rumors of a war.
There was talk of a second-coming,
talk of making it into the wilds, the country
talk of Jesus as a grand work of fiction, too
and the only certainty was change
the crowds urged: where were they going?
people they never thought were there before came strangling the streets
all moving west, away
they, with the children, ran too
this is all they knew to do
something big was ensuing
the city wouldn't last
the countless grey planes dropping many more bombs
seemed a joke
but many still believed in gravity…
they had found themselves somehow upon this silhouetted hill
shadowed against the high whipping flames of the far-off city
the children woke, mother weeping, father watching
the air bred suddenly a new peril
a stench spread a frenzy in the children, a new rumor
they were running as in a circle :
hand in hand, the children close
when the air dropped them as if it were a wall.
And so close to the river…
