You've heard Parliament, The Time, Rick James & Prince. Now hear this.
It's rare for me to start a song with just a beat, but one day in 1990 on the way to the Laundrette this groove came to me, so I turned back, set-up the instruments and put it all down on tape. When I finally got back to the laundrette (about half an hour later) some of my clothes had been stolen.
The song is about how materialistic people try to buy class. A decade later I heard Prince's song Style which has a similar theme to the finished version of this song. These lyrics were improvised, which is how I write many of the verses to my songs. But I think it's the only time I've ever done it with both the chorus and verse and been happy with the first attempt.
