Story behind the song
As George was following media coverage of Cindy Sheehan's anti-war protests near President Bush's Crawford ranch, he began thinking of our propensity for forgetting about events once they have left the front page. He began writing "Nothing Happened Here." Ironically, he got sidetracked from finishing the song until the disasterous floods in New Orleans reminded him not to forget.
Lyrics
VERSE 1: Used to be a river below; They swam against the current every day. Thought the dam they built was just for show; Photos of the fish been thrown away. CHORUS: Only your imagination Growing every year; Your memories are open spaces; Nothing happened here. VERSE 2: A thousand women whispered to the sky; Voices in a state of disrepair. Fast became the talk of passersby; I swear I spoke with someone who was there. CHORUS VERSE 3: Covered anything they couldn’t burn With pieces that they found before it rained. Left yesterday forgetting all they’ve learned, Washed away the dirt that still remained. CHORUS
