Sometimes, dreams can kill you in more ways than one. Meet Joey.
His name was Joey, born on the 12th of September
he’d wanted to be an astronaut for as far as he remembered
And since birth, his goal in life was to reach the stars
And raise his heights as well as those letters on his report card
See, his parents told him he could achieve above the atmosphere
And he believed, so in kindergarten he made it clear
That his life would be a planet revolving around his numeric dream
Of reaching the #1 echelon of fitness and grades, and so it seemed
That through elementary school, he ignored friends to please the teacher
And sat down at his desk while kids went outside and wore out their sneakers
In junior high, instead of mixing hormones, he mixed with beakers
A knowledge seeker, adults adored him but the kids ignored him
They found his study habits hella borin, his dreams of soarin’
To the stars became psychological one day in the high school lab
See, he got picked on by almost every boy, and one day he asked his dad
Why he’d have to act so passive while the bullies stole his glasses
His dad said, “Son, you’ll be laughing at them when you achieve your dream
As you look down from the shuttle and up at the stars that gleam”
So he let them mistreat him inhumanely, and he tried to live his life
Until little Cindy stepped right in, a girl that’d make it right
She told him she loved philanthropy, and that she really cared
And she hated to be abused, cuz at home no one was even there
And from then on to high school, Joey learned to feel, for someone else
And Cindy loved his aloofness, it caused her little heart to melt
But they never got to see each other, cuz Joey worked on his transcript
And she could only admire from afar, cuz at lunch he’d study and eat his sandwich
But one day, she approached him at his lonely table while he studied astronomy
She said, “Last week was senior prom, and I wish you would’ve gone with me”
Joey felt regret, and he said, “If I could turn back time, I would’ve so”
She said, “Actually the prom’s in a month, so would you like to go?”
Well Joey said yes, but he found out he had an interview with Yale
So that Saturday night, he left Cindy with her corsage and bailed
She never spoke to him again, and Joey hid that he really cared
He got into Yale, and he forgot about her while he was there
And 12 years later, he found himself strapped in the shuttle
About to finish his dream, time passed so fast in his hustle
And as he stared at the beautiful stars, he suddenly wished Cindy was with him
And he wished he hadn’t skipped that night, or at least just been forgiven
But too late, the emergency signals went off
And the cabin suddenly depressurized, a puncture in the hull had just popped
And Joey told ground control not to worry, he wasn’t afraid to die
He said: “How can I pass away, when I’ve never been alive”
