Probably because I've been near the poverty level all my life and this was an attempt at showing how those of us at that level are truly no different than people with money and "things".
When I was a little boy my Daddy once told me,
"Work real hard for what you want and it will come to be."
He said, "Money won't buy everything, just be proud of your good name
And when people try to run you down, Son, remember we're all the same."
I see you Mister Business Man in your three piece suit,
Starin' down your nose at me in my worn out boots.
Just because I look this way, you won't give me the time of day
But when that sun goes down tonight I'll know I've earned my pay.
You may own a bigger house and drive a better car,
But what you own and what you drive don't tell me what you are.
You were brought into this world like me - in your birthday suit
And you put your pants on the same way that I do.
There's people all around this town - I see them every day
Expecting me to step aside and get out of their way.
They're showin' off their diamond rings, fancy cars, and boats, and things,
But there's one thing they don't understand - I fly on different wings.
They may own a bigger house and drive a better car,
But what they own and what they drive don't tell me what they are.
They were brought into this world like me - in their birthday suit,
And they put their pants on the same way that I do.
Yeah, they were brought into this world like me - in their birthday suit,
And they put their pants on the same way that I do.
